Portsmouth’s Sporting Director Richard Hughes has said they would ‘absolutely’ consider re-signing Manchester City midfielder Alex Robertson this summer.

Portsmouth are preparing for life back in the Championship after winning the League One title and have a big few months ahead on the transfer front. There is expected to be both comings and goings from Fratton Park as John Mousinho looks to freshen up his ranks.

Robertson, 21, spent this past season on loan at Pompey and made 27 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with one goal. He was a hit in Hampshire before injury struck and ended his campaign.

Hughes has had this to say on the player’s situation, as per a report by The News: “Alex is a really good player, we like him. He's still recovering from his injury, so we have to let that pan out, but again if there was an opportunity for us to revisit those conversations, we absolutely would do.”

Portsmouth eye Manchester City return

Landing Robertson again would be a big boost for Portsmouth as they look to carry on their momentum from their promotion into the next campaign in the second tier.

However, he needs to be fit though and will have to fully recover from his injury first and foremost before Pompey can make their decision.

His future also lies in the hands of Manchester City. He is back at the Etihad Stadium now and his parent club have to weigh up his options and work out what is the best move for him at this stage of his career.

If Mousinho was able to bring him back, he would provide more competition and depth to his midfield department.

The Australia international, who has two caps under his belt so far in his career, moved over to England from Down Under in 2013 and initially played for Manchester United.

He then switched to the blue side of the city after two years but is yet to make a senior appearance for Pep Guardiola’s men.

The Dundee-born man linked up with Ross County on loan in the country of his birth in 2021 and played five times for the Highlands outfit.

Robertson then joined Portsmouth last year and impressed during his spell down south.

What next for Portsmouth?

Portsmouth will keep tabs on him over the next couple of months and monitor what happens.

They have published their retained list recently and confirmed the likes of Sean Raggett, Joe Rafferty and Lee Evans are leaving the club as free agents.

That will free up space and funds to bring in other reinforcements, potentially Robertson, as they gear up for life in the league above.
