Crawley Town loanee Laurence Maguire has been released by Chesterfield, as announced on their official club website.

Crawley Town landed the defender on a temporary basis last summer and he will become a free agent this summer. The door has swung open for the League Two promotion hopefuls to sign him permanently ahead of next season if they want to.

Maguire, 27, has made 37 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils, 34 of which have come in the league, and he has chipped in with three goals from the back. His loan side are in play-off semi-final second leg action against MK Dons this weekend and lead 3-0 from the first leg as they eye a place at Wembley.

Chesterfield have published their retained list following their promotion from the National League and have confirmed the centre-back’s departure. The likes of Jeff King, Luke Chadwick and Bailey Clements have also gone.

Crawley Town loan man departs

Crawley Town brought in Maguire last year to bolster their defensive department and he has turned out to be a useful addition for the Sussex outfit.

He has helped them get into the top seven under former Swindon Town manager Scott Lindsey as they look to go up to League One.

The Sheffield-born man has been on the books at Chesterfield for his whole career to date and has risen up through their academy ranks. He was a regular for the fifth tier champions at various youth levels before breaking into their first-team.

He has played 173 games for the Spirerites altogether and has found the net on nine occasions, as well as having a loan stint away at AFC Fylde in the past.

Paul Cook let him depart for a change of scene when the Red Devils came calling after deciding that he wasn’t part of his plans for this campaign.

Maguire, who is the brother of Manchester United and England man Harry, has now cut ties with Chesterfield permanently for the first time.

Will Crawley Town sign him?

Crawley Town’s immediate focus will be on getting to the play-off final with one of Doncaster Rovers or Crewe Alexandra awaiting for them. They are well in the ascendancy against MK Dons but aren’t through just yet.

They need a strong defensive performance from Maguire and his backline teammates at Stadium.MK to get over the line.

The Red Devils will then have a decision to make as to whether to lure him back down south or let him consider other options.
